Remote sensing as a tool is being used for major exploration programme in the country by various stake holder Ministries such as Ministry of Mines, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Department of Atomic Energy and Ministry of Steel.

Synoptic view provided by Remote sensing data helps in Lithological, Geomorphological and Structural mapping, where as the spectral characteristics are used for lithological & mineralogical discrimination and for mapping regions of hydrothermal alterations indicative of mineralization.

IRS data have contributed immensely in various domains of geology ranging from direct applications like geomorphological/ lithological/ structural mapping to applied aspects like geo-exploration, geo-environmental and geo-hazard studies.
