Weather refers to instantaneous state of the atmosphere and climate is the long term average state of the atmosphere (typically a few decades). Weather prediction and climate monitoring requires in-situ observational network of Automatic Weather Stations (AWS), GPS Radiosonde stations, Doppler Weather Radar, Wind Profiler, etc., as well as satellite measurements. ISRO has established a network of 1158 AWS across the country. ISRO has developed technology for many of these observing instruments in house. The data from these AWS are used for initializing numerical weather prediction as well as validating the forecasts. ISRO has facilities to monitor atmospheric parameters like vertical wind profile, round the clock, at NARL using MST Radar which helps in detailed study of various atmospheric phenomena and underlying mechanisms. Experimental weather forecasts are prepared for R&D purposes and are available in www.mosdac.gov.in and forecast.narl.gov.in
